Chevy is telling us that they aren’t kidding around when it comes to pickups. We spotted a next-gen prototype of 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 out in the wild. Even though it is an extensive update of the current model, we still think that it may have some big things to offer.
Introduced in 2014, the current Silverado 1500 brought the General Motors’ K2XX body-on-frame platform for full-size SUVs and pickups. At the time that platform was the next big thing.
Unfortunately the truck kind of failed when it comes to sale figures. Silverado sales were down around 4.3% in 2016 while Ford’s F-series registered a 5.2% gain over the same period.
The company now promised ‘the new level of technology’ to be featured in the new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It should be released in 2018 as a 2019 model. They also said that more aluminum construction-wise will be used in order to fight of their rival Ford.
Spy photos depict those same old blocky details that can be seen on the current gen model, but this time the truck has new LED headlights and a more expressive looking front bumper design. We also spotted a more prominent pair of exhaust tips on the rear end of the vehicle.
Interior-wise the things got a little bit more updated. The dashboard has the same layout as the current version, but the diagonal of the infotainment screen has been enlarged.
When it comes to mechanics, the 10-speed automatic that GM developed with Ford should be standard across the whole range. We still don’t know what company’s plans are concerning the powertrains however we should see the current V-6 and V-8 options present in the next-gen Silverado. We have high hopes that the Silverado will match Raptor’s performance stats since we saw the 450-horsepower Silverado concept that was revealed at the 2017 SEMA.
We believe that the new Silverado 1500 will debut in the first quarter of 2018. Moreover, the 2018 Detroit Auto Show is in January, and we don’t see why they shouldn’t unveil it on that occasion. It is the perfect opportunity for such thing to happen. We also expect the new version of GMC Sierra 1500 to come out shortly after. On top of that, we believe that Ram will also present a refreshed 1500 in the first few months of the new year.
