The 2018 Ssangyong Rexton has been finally revealed by the Korean automaker’s social media pages which happened just before its official Seoul motor show debut, and we can agree that it looks awesome. So far the 2018 model has been going under the code name Y400, and after its introduction, it will be sold in its home market as the Ssangyong G4 Rexton. Autocar, on the other hand, states that it will sell in much of the rest of the world without that G4 designation.
As you can see from the pictures we provided for you, it looks a lot like the LIV-2 Concept from the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The main differences we can spot are mainly around the headlamp graphics, and details, like the bumpers, alloy wheels, and interior trim and color choices. According to some reports, it will be available in both the RWD and AWD drive forms with a seven-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission. Buyers will be able to choose between the 178 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque received from 2.2 L turbo-diesel motor and the 221 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque that will be offered by 2.0 L turbocharged petrol engine.
The dimensions of the 2018 Ssangyong Rexton were revealed in a report last week, and it will measure 4,850 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,800 mm high, and rides on a 2,864 mm wheelbase. These dimensions actually make it 130 mm longer than today’s car also bringing 44 mm longer wheelbase, but its roof will sit somewhat closer to the ground (around 30 mm lower). This is nothing to be concerned because the increase in all other dimensions can only mean a lot more comfort and space which definitely trumps the ride height.
It will ride on the new “Quad-Frame” which makes it the first car to use the 1.5 Gpa giga-steel. But that is not all, the use of this high-strength steel should also make it considerably lighter than the previous version. All of these changes in dimensions and structure also means that there will be some differences in safety and road manners, and besides those, this new SUV will offer its buyer a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a surround-view camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, as well.
According to the reports, the new Rexton will go on sale in South Korea during the first half of 2017 while the other markets should be reached by the end of 2017, which is awesome. The only one unknown is if the 2018 Rexton will hit the dealerships in Australia. But as the time passes and the strategy develops we believe that we will have info regarding that as well. Stay tuned for updates regarding the topic.
