The 2018 Mercedes G-Class has been spotted doing some cold weather tests, but it was accompanied by the top trim G63. Although these vehicles were heavily camouflaged, the exterior of the regular G-Class looks the same, and that is something we expected knowing how much buyers of these beasts love that boxy shape, but we know that some changes in the interior and under the hood are coming our way. Note that the G-Class is the oldest model in the lineup of the German carmaker and so far it had undergone some upgrades, with the most important ones in 1990 when the W463 generation was launched.
Based on the spy shots, we can conclude that the G-Class will keep that boxy shape, but according to some speculations, the new model should be four inches wider. This is important because the interior space will increase and additional four inches allows a lot of room to play with, Another thing that has been rumored regarding the cabin is that German carmaker is said to integrate a digital dashboard. The chassis of the new vehicle will be redesigned and heavily upgraded, the result of this change is the much lighter SUV. What we could hear is that the 2018 Mercedes G-Class will be 882 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which will affect performance and fuel efficiency.
The G63, on the other hand, will come with a new biturbo 4.0-liter V8 unit instead of the current biturbo 5.5-liter engine. This engine can be found in C63 and E63 S, and it is delivered in few different state of tunes developing from 470 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque to 603 horses and 627 lb-ft of torque respectively. At this point, we do not know how much power it will produce in the new G63. Nevertheless, the powerplant will be mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox that will send power to all wheels.
