Mercedes-Benz has finally launched its E-Class Coupe 2018 MY that will join the sedan model, whereas a new convertible is expected later in the year. This car comes without rear doors, and there are no barriers between the front and rear windows as well as frames that surround them. The E-Class Coupe has gone for a ride, and let us see how it did.
Size
Compared to its sedan brother, the two-door coupe is shorter and lower, while its wheelbase has eliminated a few inches between the wheel wells. Despite that, the wheelbase is almost five inches longer than the one on the previous-generation E-Class Coupe, a vehicle that has been based on the C-Class – thus all this size difference.

With the lower center of gravity and sportier appearance than the sedan, the E-Class coupe looks really fresh, and even people with average height can ride in the back seat without feeling uncomfortable. Because of the frameless, retractable windows and gigantic retractable panoramic glass roof, there is more light and air inside the cabin, but what makes this interior beautiful is the dashboard with a row of fashionable HVAC vents.
Test Drive, Engine, Autonomous Tech
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe has been tested on winding mountain and village roads around Catalonia, and even though the coupe looks sportier than the sedan, it doesn’t feel like it. The difference between the two is negligible, and it is also irrelevant since the E-Class coupe is not near the AMG GT or C63 S coupe. We can say that harshness is not the most important characteristic of the new car, which reminds us of an elegant S550 Coupe and not in a bad way.
Under the hood of the new car lies a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque and driving this model is a pleasure. The engine is noisy and rough when needed, and it is perfect for this car as it really makes it exciting, even though it is mated with the not-so-great 9-GTRONIC transmission. Mercedes-Benz has a substantial heritage when it comes to coupes and W114, W123 and W123 are worth mentioning, but this E-Class coupe is spot-on.
The reason, perhaps, why sportiness is not actually experienced in the E-Class is the fact that the car comes with Level Two autonomous driving system, which is probably the most sophisticated system currently offered in the market. The capabilities of this technology may even exceed the ones that can be found in the S-Class, and we need to mention that during the test drive, the vehicle has been driving itself most of the time.
The autonomous system is really extraordinary, and it slows down as soon as its spots the speed limit sign. Even when it is engaged on four-lane roads in boulevards, it could easily change the lanes, and all you need to do is flick the turn-signal lever. It behaves well on the crowded streets of Barcelona, and it even sees scooter riders that plague the city, but if you plan to let the E-Class drive you across the congested roads by itself, don’t complain about parking sensor noises that go on and all the time.
2018 E-Class Coupe Price
The important thing is that a lot of people stopped to admire the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which only proves how attractive it looks. It turned a lot of heads of youngsters, but even the older adults were looking at it with some kind of admiration. The E-Class is expected to hit the market in the summer in the US and once it does, it will probably cost the same as the current model. This means that we should expect the price to be around mid-$50,000, while the addition of 4MATIC AWD will cost $2,500. The AMG E43 that will produce 396 hp may arrive sometime in the future, but a 603-hp AMG E63 S is unlikely.
