The performance numbers for the Civic Type R have been officially revealed, but Honda also displayed specs for the Si model. According to a member of a car forum CivicX, Honda said in an email that the upcoming Civic Si will have an engine good for 192 lb-ft of torque.
This is pretty much what we have expected as this number puts the sport compact between the range-topping Type R and less powerful Civic Hatchback Sport. The Sport model delivers 177 lb-ft of torque, which means that the more powerful 1.5-liter turbo engine in the Si produces only 15 lb-ft of torque more and it is surprising that the Civic Si is closer to the Sport than the Type R. If this information is correct, the new version will make 19 more lb-ft of torque than the previous naturally aspirated Civic Si. Vehicles such as the VW GTI and Focus ST which are rated at 258 and 270 lb-ft of torque respectively, outscore the Honda’s model in this aspect by far.
However, there is a possibility that Honda prepares something else to compensate for the torque output. We might see the new model with a substantial horsepower increase and what is likely is that the new vehicle will have more power than its predecessor that delivered 205 hp. To be honest, they would need a significant jump in figures to be able to reach some of its rivals we already mentioned so that might not happen, at least not with this version.
Another possibility is that the new 2018 Honda Civic Si comes with a lower starting price or additional standard features inside the cabin and beat its torquier rivals in these segments. The Focus ST goes from $25,650 for example, so with the price reduction or some extra equipment, Honda would solve its problem.
