The 2018 Ford F-150 is Ford’s best-selling vehicle and a refreshed version debuted at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. The front of the new model looks different and the new grille, together with the headlights, are more prominent.
Ford designer Gordon Platto says: “We want to show real harmony between Super Duty and F-150.” This is the main reason Ford decided to redesign the front fascia of their truck which now has the grille that extends into the headlight clusters, while the engineers made a double C-clamp design for the LED running lights. According to Platto, the new vehicle will come with six new wheel and seven new grille designs plus the three new appliqués for the tailgate. Speaking of grilles, they will be either body colored, chrome or mesh, while the wheels will range from 17 to 22 inches in size.
The customers will have a choice of five engine options for their Ford F-150. What is outstanding is that a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 unit is confirmed and it will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The diesel option will be available from Summer 2018, so the performance figures for this engine remain unknown. This is the version of the 3.0-liter that powers the Land Rover Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which are sold on the US market.
Moreover, the 2018 model will come with a new 3.3-liter V6 powerplant as a base engine, but it will produce the same 282 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque as the 3.5-liter unit that Ford gave up on. This engine will be combined with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.7- and 3.5-liter EcoBoost 6-cylinders and the 5.0-liter V8 are carryover units, and they are also offered as options. All three of them are paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission.
Finally, Ford will introduce new safety equipment to their F-150 such as pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection and cruise control with full stop-and-go functionality. Also, the new truck will get modern infotainment tech bits and pieces like a B&O Play audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and more. It is expected to go on sale sometime in 2017.
