Something strange has been going on with the BMW Z4 lately. It is far from being a BMW’s top-seller, and that is the reason why it was discontinued in 2016 everywhere around the world, but it is still sold in the US.
Even though it stayed, only 75 roadsters were delivered in the US in December and in 2016 there were only 1,187 shipments. This was a disastrous result because even the MINI convertible has been bought in 4,584 examples, whereas the X5, for instance, reached 55,000 units in 2016.
The new 2018 BMW Z4 is supposed to come with two different powertrain options, whereas the German company doesn’t plan to introduce an M version at all. Speaking of engines, a 2.0-liter B48 unit will power the Z4 sDrive30i, whereas a more powerful 3.0-liter B58 will be under the hood of the Z4 M40i. Both of these engines are paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels.
The 2018 BMW Z4 will come with a fabric top, unlike the current model. However, if you believe that folding metal roof is simply a must-have, then look for the MX-5 RF or the SLC. Although some rumors indicated that the new model will be called the Z5, they turn out to be wrong as the car will keep the Z4 moniker.
Two generations came prior to this one, which means that BMW tries to create a heritage. When it comes to the name of the vehicle, the ‘Z’ stands for Zukunft, which translates to ‘future’ in and this is kind of ironic because the car’s focus is old-fashioned values such as driver enjoyment.
The latest rendering of the 2018 BMW Z4 is a courtesy of X-Tomi Design. It has been decided that the placement of the headlights and the oversized kidney grilles will not change, while the air intakes look a lot like those of the new 5 Series M Sport version.
