The 2017 Volvo S90 will come as a successor to S80, but it will be a completely new car, considering that it will be built on a new platform and it won’t take any of the parts from the previous model. The XC90 crossover that went on sale last year will join forces with the new S90, and the two vehicles will try to beat the competition. It will be hard for the S90 considering that Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series are only some of the cars in their way.
Styling
The design of 2017 Volvo S90 sedan is one of the best that the market has to offer. It has a long, almost flat hood, whereas the front end is upright, indicating that we are talking about an RWD vehicle. However, this is not entirely true, since the S90 has FWD and the front overhang is very short. Speaking about the overhang, the rear one is longer compared to the ones of other cars in that category.
The front grille comes with the vertical slats, and in the middle of it, we see the famous Volvo badge. Next to the grille, there are “Thor’s Hammer” headlights which contribute to the aggressive look. Overall the front end is vertical, but not sharp. Moving to the rear end, we have a trunk lid that resembles a box, and just like the front end, the rear is also upright. The rear lights have C-shape, and they have very sharp lines. Also, on the back, there is a company’s “Volvo” name written on it, which is a nice addition.
The interior looks really upscale with terrific contrasting details. There are light tones and some metallic accents which contribute to the quite nice look of the cabin. In addition to that, the Swedish carmaker decided to add wood-tone panels for an even more fashionable interior. 2017 Volvo S90 Engine
The standard engine in the 2017 Volvo S90 is a 2.0-liter inline four turbo with T5 mark and is capable of pushing 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, the T6 model is equipped with both supercharger and turbocharger 2.0-liter unit that is further refined with direct-injection. The T6 engine is good for 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both units are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, but the difference is that the T5 has FWD, whereas the T6 has AWD setup.
The top speed of both versions is limited to 130 mph, but the acceleration differs significantly. Namely, the T5 takes 6.5 seconds to go from 0-60 mph. On the other hand, the T6 completes the 0-60 mph run in just 5.7 seconds. FWD Volvo S90 manages 27 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 34 mpg highway). On the other hand, the numbers decline with the AWD to 25 mpg combined, 22/31 mpg city and highway respectively.
Driving and Handling
First of all, we need to mention many driver-assist systems in which you get caught up very easily. However, if you turn them off, you will get to see how the S90 feels on the road. Well, it is a tremendous feeling to ride the 2017 Volvo S90. For example, the T6 can be a great sports sedan with its four-cylinder engine, and it has great grip, acceleration, and handling.
Volvo said that you could drive the car with “relaxed confidence” and it is true. The new sedan is more capable than you would think, and it is trustworthy and stable in corners. Important Features
The 2017 Volvo S90 comes with many interesting features, and we are going to mention some of them. Firstly there is Gen2 Pilot Assist system. This system will help the driver stay in the lane the whole time, but the driver has to hold the steering wheel, don’t mix this with autopilot of any king.
The second essential characteristic is called “Run-off-Road Mitigation”. Its purpose is to prevent the most common types of fatal accidents. When you travel between 40-85 mph, the car can sense if you are going to drift off the road. The brakes are engaged automatically and the car steers to avoid the accidents. However, if you react in an overt way, you can prevent this action. Inside, the Swedish company offers cutting edge Infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. There are, of course, more standard features, but these are unique ones. It also comes with the availability of a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system for premium enjoyment in your favorite music.
Optional equipment
Besides a tremendous number of standard tech bits and pieces, Volvo also offers terrific optional features. You can opt for a Vision Package which costs $1,000, and it brings a surround-view camera system and retractable rearview mirrors. In addition to that, you would also get auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors and blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alert. Another option is Climate Package priced at $1,550. Heating elements on the front seats, rear seats and steering wheel are included. In addition, the heating is offered on the washer nozzles and windshield.
The last but not least is the Convenience Package that comes with Front Park Assist and Park Assist Pilot and can be purchased with the 2017 Volvo S90. On the list of optional extras, you can also find 12-volt power outlets and a power trunk lid. The package also contains a universal garage-door opener, and for all this, you need to pay additional $1,000. There are some standalone parts such as a head-up display or heated front seats plus the Premium Air Suspension is also an option.

The starting price of the base T5 S90 Momentum is $47,945. However, if you decide to upgrade your T6 with extra features, the price goes over $67,000. There is no doubt that the 2017 Volvo S90 is an exceptional vehicle but it does come with a hefty price.
