The name of this concept is Giugiaro, and it debuted in 2006 at Los Angeles Auto Show. It was based on the fifth-gen Mustang (GT version), and it hosted a supercharged 4.6-liter V8 engine that was capable of producing around 500 HP and as an addition it had Ford Racing Handling Pack. A long time has passed since it was first seen, and you are probably asking how come we bring it now? Well, the fact is that its scissor doors and every single body panel make this unique Mustang a head turner still after all these years.
2006 Ford Mustang exterior and interior design
You probably can’t remember, but this Mustang has been designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, son of Giorgetto Giugiaro, a man that is responsible for the design of the new Italdesign Speciali supercar. Fabrizio spent “30.000 hours of blood, sweat and tears” while creating this spectacular and unique Mustang GT which looks awesome with this vibrant orange color. As you can probably notice the front is wider by 30 mm (1.1 inches) while the back is 80 mm (3.1 inches) fatter and that is all thanks to the carbon fiber fenders and the completely modified body panels which have been redesigned at the studio in Turin, Italy.
The exterior design of the car is really remarkable and thanks to the touch-operated scissor doors and a huge single-piece curved glass roof you really can’t notice it on the street. While on the subject of the curved glass roof it is important to point out that it extends from the hood to the trunk and is made from the special type of crystal able to fully block UV radiation. If you can see in the images, Fabrizio did a clever thing, and instead of conventional side mirrors he inserted tiny cameras and replaced the rear side windows with transparent louvers. The external look is rounded up with the back of the car that kept the taillights of the 1964 Mustang which were redesigned modernly and with a set of tailor-made 20-inch wheels with 275/40 front and 315/35 rear tires.
When it comes to the interior, we can say that the cabin is surely a sight and a half, but not necessarily in a good way. The entire interior is covered in genuine horse hide from the headrests to the dark brown mottled horse hides covering the seat cushions and backrests. The only nice looking thing in the entire cabin is the two-tone dash separated in the middle by a chrome bar, as well as is the flat-bottomed steering wheel with three double spokes.
Engine
Since the Giugiaro concept is based on the range-topping GT, it unsurprisingly hosts a 4.6 L V8 engine developing 300 horsepower in the regular model, but since the entire car is special, the engine needed to be as well. To do this, the company decided to fit the Ford Racing supercharger which boosted output to somewhere in the region of 500 HP.
They also added some parts from the FR500C race car, specifically in the chassis segment. All of this is rounded up with a Ford Racing Handling Pack which dropped the ride height by around 38 mm (1.5 inches) and give it a lower and much meaner stance. But enough writing, feast your eyes on the pictures we provided for you. These are from the original press release published in November 2006 when the concept made its debut in L.A. Enjoy!
