66. Why do We Sleep?

Sleep is an essential part of the life of every living being. When we are deprived of sleep, we start hallucinating and not sleeping for days can be deadly. We sleep to regain energy, but why do we sleep at all? Can we just eat our food and get energy from it? Neuroscientist Dr. Michael Halassa said: “It’s sort of embarrassing, but it’s not clear why we need to sleep at all.”
The scientists concluded that sleep does something to our brain, but they cannot get their hands on what is that exactly. But whatever that “something” is, it is definitely a good thing. Nobody knows these processes and why we need to sleep. Various theories exist, but none of them answers the question adequately.
